I can't believe "School of Rock," the infectiously delightful musical comedy that proved indie icon Richard Linklater could go mainstream without losing his edge, would be as great as it is without Jack Black. I honestly couldn't see anyone else playing his role and bringing the level of charisma and magnetism he permeates so easily.

An out-of-work wannabe rock star poses as a substitute teacher and after finding out his students are aces in band, enters them into a "Battle of the Bands" competition. This movie was funny and really enjoyable to watch.

Amusing if you're a fan of Jack Black's one man, one trick show; painful if you're not. Spinal Tap lite.

Jack Black's comic energy and timing and an appreciation of rock history give backbone to what would have been an otherwise pretty standard "fish out of water" story. Joan Cusack is also a scene stealer as the uptight principal of the school Black invades. The writing is better than you would expect and the film is a whole lot of fun.

Actually I was bored until Dewey begins teaching the kids how to be Rock Stars. The chemistry between the kids and Jack Black is so real. I couldn't believe that they were acting because whenever they were having fun it literally looked like they were. Summer was adorable as the bossy manager and she and Dewey have the best scenes together. Ofcourse the talent is clearly showed onstage and the kids steal the show. They are AMAZING! Sorry Dewey. The lyrics and the music was as funny as it was entertaining. Too bad they aren't a real band.

Fun for everyone, including those with no rock knowledge. Black is great with the kids and the movie has some good jokes. It also captures the real spirit of rock.

Comedies tend to get overlooked when they're handing out the medals (too trivial), but not by me. I can't recall when I saw a funnier film than this. What makes it so is Jack Black's astonishing performance as hopeless guitarist Dewey Finn, a great script and Linklater's attention to detail. If you're going to spoof a genre, then do so with affection and accuracy as Linklater does here. The kids in the film are brilliant, and they played and sung all the music themselves. 11/10 for that, guys. Linklater has really come on strong in the last couple of years. From commercial films like this, to experimental work such as Waking Dreams, and the artful Before Sunrise. Right now, he seems to be able to make a fist of anything.

Joan Cusack and Sarah Silverman are great. But, Jack Black is... well... not.
