It started out really great, and I was excited to see it, because it was directed by Barbara Kopple. But then things turned dirty and Natalie Maines lost all restraint (using the F word against the President and Toby Keith) which forced me to lose any respect for her.

I have always been a Dixie Chicks fan so this documentary caught my interest. During parts I felt sorry for the Dixie Chicks especially the sisters who really didn't have anything to do with it. At the same time I don't think it is right that just beacuse you are famous you have a right to mouth off your views. We all have views but we don't stand up in front of a crowd and shout them out. The documentary was also a little choppy, going from one year to the next, to next and then going back again. I say see it if you can watch it with out getting too upset by the politics of it all.

This was an interesting look at what happened to the Dixie Chicks after they made the remarks about the president before the Iraq War in 2003. At times it got a little slow but over all it was an good movie. I you ever listened to the dixie chicks or are anti the Iraq War you would probably find this interesting to rent. Unfortunately I believe it is only available through blockbuster so if you have netflix to bad.

SHUT UP & SING is an impassioned, politically informed documentary about the Dixie Chicks' run-in with country music radio and fans. The film traces the backlash against the Chicks following singer Natalie Maines' now-infamous declaration at a London concert on March 10, 2003: "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." A boycott of their music threatened their career. Maines, Martie Maguire, and Emily Robison took on the controversy as a means to defend "free speech." They spoke against majority opinion, which supported the invasion of Iraq. Cutting back and forth in time, Shut Up & Sing includes concert footage, reactions to a death threat made against Maines, recording sessions for their ablum 'Taking the Long Way' , and discussions with manager …

A New Respect for Dixie Chicks
Franz Patrick - wrote on 10/21/2008
Prior to watching this documentary, I liked the Dixie Chicks (Natalie Maines, Emily Robinson, and Martie Maguire) because their songs are catchy and fun. My parents own their CDs and I came across their album “Fly” one day and became a fan right then. I’m not much of a fan of country music but I am a fan of the Dixie Chicks. But after viewing this movie, I respect them even more because of the way they stuck together as not only a band but also as close friends after Maines said that she’s ashamed of President Bush. It was scary watching how the media like the FOX News, conservative politicians, and country stations (and fans!) made her statement into a much bigger deal than it should have been. Personally, I don’t think Maines did anything wrong because it’s her opinion and …
