Soul Man is about a white guy overdoses on tanning pills to make himself appear black so that he can use affirmative action to get into college. Yes that's the plot to this movie and I'm more shocked that such a film like this could exist, but sadly it dose and it's horrible. Who ever came up with the idea of Soul Man should be fired and never work on a movie ever again, because Soul Man is just trash. It's unfunny, tasteless, idiotic and straight up offensive.

Contrived schmaltzy rubbish that purports to tackle race issues but at best is superficial, at worst exploitative in its trite treatment of a serious issue.

'Soul Man' is quite an impressive misstep of merriment. Leslie Nielson, James Earl Jones, and C. Thomas Howell are all excellent talents and the film gives them absolutely no material to work with, apart from 'white people are not cool'. You don't BLOODY SAY! The film's context arguably does not warrant the infamy its use of blackface has brought it, but the film is certainly is not clever enough to ever really sharpen 'Soul Man's edgy premise. Even still, deserves its fair share of spiteful criticism for being spectacularly unfunny.
