Plot: Vincent Price plays Matthew Hopkins, a 17th century witch-hunter who abused his limitless power to convict and burn hundreds of innocent victims for money and power. When he uses his position to gain sexual favors from a young woman, he doesn't count on her husband, a career soldier, to cut of swathe of bloody retribution across the English countryside in search of vengeance.

A surprisingly artful exploitation flick about what else? Exploitation. Not only does "Witchfinder General" make proper use of Vincent Price's villainous on-screen reputation, but its unflinching attention to the sadism and violence related to the Puritan methods of witchhunting makes similar works on the subject such as Arthur Miller's "The Crucible" look like child's play by comparison.

It's difficult to classify this one as strictly "horror', although "historical" doesn't quite cover it, either. I would say it is mostly a historical drama with some horrific elements. Although we never see any actual witches (that we know of), the techniques used to identify, interrogate and eventually destroy those suspected of witchcraft are quite gruesome.
Moreover, I would say that the elements driving the story forward are strictly romance and action-oriented. And there is some genuine sympathy and suspense to be generated from the relationship between Richard Marshall (career soldier) and Sarah Lowes (suspected witch).
Regardless of the category, it's a well-made film with some effective direction by Michael Reeves and one of the most quietly terrifying performances that …
