Imagine how the pitch for this went: "It's about two guys in an old car racing coast-to-coast against a guy in a new car and, er, that's it". But the car is a souped-up '55 Chevy and the new car is a Pontiac Trans-Am and the respective drivers are James Taylor and Dennis Wilson plus Warren Oates. Oh, and there's a girl tagging along for the ride. Monte Hellman's existential journey is the road movie to end them all.

James Taylor and Dennis Wilson are not actors. Although these roles don't require them to stretch very far, they still seem awkward; they're not acting, but they're also not being very natural. The idea is interesting, but it didn't hold my attention. I didn't care very much about the contest with Warren Oates, and I wasn't drawn in to the girl's situation to care enough about what happens to her. I can see why some may think this movie's of interest. Just not my cup of tea.

One of the most ambiguous and unique road movies of all time. Modest in every way yet the subtlety speaks large volumes in this magnificent movie.
