Truffaut is at his best with this film when he focuses on using his knack for striking imagery to tell the story. When he begins to over-emphasize the film (and adaptation material's) obvious message, the dialogue is a bit stiff and tedious. Still an above average and mostly linear effort from the great director.

Good book, blah movie, best soundtrack. Bernard Herrmann's one of my favorite movie composers, and I think this all-strings score is even better than his best for Hitchcock. I haven't seen the movie in years, although I've thought I should maybe give it another chance. But I listen often to the soundtrack, which I have on vinyl, as it moves between lush, romantic passages and insistent thrusts. Needs a better movie.
