One can tell this movie wants to be 'Doctor Zhivago'. Lord knows it's just as long. There are shots that rival David Lean's epic in terms of visual splendor. The musical score is excellent. It's a shame the movie is not as entertaining as it wants to be. The fault may lie in the two lead actors, Michael Jayston and Janet Suzman, who are not bad per se. They're not terrible actors. But they're lacking in any real charisma. Tom Baker is easily the most memorable actor and you can tell he's having fun playing the notorious Russian monk Rasputin. Laurence Olivier has some great moments as a wise but tired minister. It doesn't help that the movie has no real momentum behind it.
