Although it begins kind of slowly, Sansho the Bailiff is a poignant story that is deeply affecting, with nuanced characters and a smart script. The emotional tension of the story is made more effective by populating the cast with believable characters who we genuinely want to root for, despite their tragic conditions.

An emotionally draining and beautifully shot movie and one of the greatest Japanese movies of all time. One of the most aesthetically pleasing movies to ever cross my eye.
