Confusing mess of a sequel to buddy cop classic.

Walter Hill reunites with Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte for this sequel to the 1982 hit. Except it's nowhere close as good and is barely watchable aside from the least demanding coach potatoes.
It's more mean spirited towards both its lead characters and makes a lot of jokes at their expense. There's no love interest for either and both Nolte and Murphy are strangely unlikable in this. Murphy gets off a little bit better because he's still comic relief and is great at delivering one-liners. Nolte just sounds tired and whiny.
Familiar character actors like Brion James, Kevin Tighe, and Ed O'Ross are wasted in the near incomprehensible plot. Evidently it was supposed to be a longer film but was cut to barely 90 minutes. It shows. Some characters I cannot tell if they were killed or not. …

Good sequel

Four years ago, San Fransisco Police Detective "Jack Cates" (Nick Nolte) began an investigation on the a drug lord known only as "The Iceman". However, he is the only one who believes the person exists and has been told numerous times by superiors to stop his investigation.
"Cates" has two prime suspects in his investigation, one of which is killed in a shootout with the detective when a nearby gas pump explodes. Since the suspect's gun is nowhere to be found, "Cates" is suspended indefinately.
Once again, he must rely on jailed convict "Reggie Hammond" (Eddie Murphy) for help. But this time, "Hammond" is being released after a four-year stint behind bars. It is quickly learned that there is a price on his head because "Hammond" is the only one who has ever seen "The Iceman", and …
