The plot and characterizations were almost nonexistant, but the visuals were glorious -- from mountains and mists down to Mads Mikkelsen's incredible face. Good enough for me.

Not a lot of talking here - just violence and a journey to... somewhere - look, the plot here isn't the issue - watch for the grit and scenery. It's something different - I can't say "good" per se, but offers something beyond a typical film.

Nicolas Winding Refn liebt Midnight Movies und sein Valhalla Rising ist einer dieser Arthaus Filme, die ganz bewusst die Nähe zum Grindhouse suchen. Refn selbst sieht die Geschichte des einäugigen Kriegers, verkörpert von Mads Mikkelsen, als Midnight Movie der frühen 70er. Mikkelsens Wikinger wird von seinen Feinden in Gefangenschaft gefoltert, wie ein Tier gehalten. Als ihm die Flucht gelingt, entwickelt er übermenschlichen Kräfte, um sie alle zu töten. Einauge (und so heisst er tatsächlich) spricht nicht einen Satz und auch von seinen Feinden hören wir höchstens mal einen Todesschrei. Schweigend spritzt das Blut in der gruseligen Hügellandschaft Schottlands, welche die Wikingerwelt vor 1000 Jahren darstellt. Nach dem Abspann des Epos, hätte ich Refn am liebsten dafür …

An escaped warrior slave and a group of religious zealots seeking the holy land find themselves in unfamiliar territory when their ship loses its way in fog. Director Nicolas Winding Refn, responsible for the decent if somewhat cold and uninvolving Pusher trilogy, here enters Viking territory in this tale of strangers in a strange land. As an indicator of just how pretentious this film is, lead actor Mads Mikkelsen does not utter one syllable during the entire length of the film, Refn instead telling the "story" through endless shots of desolate landscapes shot through high contrast filters, men with beards staring into the distance and occasionally mud wrestling. Apart from the brief spurts of savage violence, absolutely nothing happens in this film. A few extras from Braveheart wander …
