Plot: Fernando Valenzuela came on the scene just after Dodger Stadium caused an uproar in the Latino community by building on the Chavez Ravine. A 19-year-old unknown, from a tiny Sonoran desert village, he wasn't built like a pitcher. But the pudgy pitcher had a unique style and a wicked screwball that would lead to packed stadiums and a 1981 rookie year for the record books - and for a time, a nation would catch Fernando Fever. -- Chris Kavan

Another fantastic entry in the 30 for 30 series. Granted, I'm not a huge baseball fan, so I probably got more information out of this one than those much more familiar with Valenzuela - but though it's cliche (as they state at the beginning) it really is an American dream "rags to riches" story - complete with an unlikely hero and a meteoric rise in an unforgettable rookie season. This is why real life always trumps fiction - because sometimes things that are too good to be true turn out to actually be true.
