Dear Lord God, what were they thinking...? Featuring easily the worst piece of casting in cinematic history, John Wayne stars as Genghis Khan (yes, you read that right) in the story of his life. It is quite funny for about 10 minutes, until you realise that it's quite mind-buggering dull. One star for the curiosity value, but otherwise a total waste of celluloid. The fact that financial backer Howard Hughes paid $12 million to recall every print in existence so no-one could see it should tell you everything you need to know!

A shamelessly cheesy, rampantly miscast epic dud about Mongol Genghis Kahn's rise. Laughable at best, this notorious film is remembered as probably causing the deaths of several cast and crew, including stars Wayne and Hayward, as it was filmed in Utah near nuclear testing grounds. Final Grade: D

One of the most critically maligned epics out of Hollywood's Golden Age is indeed a poorly made star vehicle whose star is grossly miscast.
John Wayne held a commanding presence throughout his career but disappearing into a role was never his strongest asset. And he sure as hell remains visibly John Wayne even though he's playing Genghis Khan but while miscast he is strangely watchable because he takes himself seriously like Tommy Wiseau in The Room. The cast of normally reliable character actors fares just as bad. Poor Susan Hayward is reduced to a shrill vamp that borders on camp far more than I'm sure she intended.
The costume design is uninspired and seem like a cluttered collection of worn outfits from similar barbarian pictures. As for the script and dialogue, like other bad …

The Conqueror

The Conqueror (1956) John Wayne in truly horrible makeup and one of the worst mustaches ever on screen is the Mongol emperor, Genghis Khan. What makes this film so bad is that half the cast, such as Wayne, tries to look Asian. Yet, the other half doesn’t even come close, such as the romantic interest for Wayne, Susan Hayward. The dialogue sounds as if the cast is part of a bad Shakespeare high school production. Even the specials effects are horrible. At one point a spear is thrown and you can see the guide wire that it’s running on. One sad note about this film, it was shot near a nuclear testing ground and a number of the cast and crew later developed cancer, including Wayne, Hayward and the director of the film, Dick Powell. - See more at: …
