Mel Gibson really delivers a powerhouse and nuanced performance here, but, sadly, it is lost amid a mess of a plot and a supporting cast that doesn't measure up to Gibson's interesting character. A dud of a thriller.

Although Gibson is aborable in this, it's not his best. It does have some good mystery/suspense but it also ends too easily. Not a fan of Roberts in this one.

A good director and three great actors are brutally underutilized but they do try their best with a script that is far too thin to justify a 132 minute running time. As a result, 'Conspiracy Theory' feels hollow when it's trying to have depth and despite the title the central conspiracy at the heart of the plot is pretty boring. What is more surprising is how boring the movie often is. I looked at a clock and it was 30 minutes into the story when it actually began! After that it took 20 minutes to introduce the villains and another hour is dedicated to the characters just wandering aimlessly same as the audience hoping for a big payoff that never happens. Like I said, the villains' plot is boring compared to similar movies despite having the freedom of implausibility as a popcorn movie. …

"Conspiracy Theory" by Yojimbo

Paranoid cab driver Mel Gibson becomes the target for government spooks when one of his many bizarre conspiracy theories turns out to be true. The team that brought us the Lethal Weapon franchise reunite for more slapstick action in this Hollywood thriller that couldn't be more middle of the road if it were scattered with roadkill. Gibson goes through the usual likeable loon motions as he tries to romance terminally bland attorney Julia Roberts while being chased by the usual gun toting, black clad suspects in helicopters and on motorbikes. Donner is quite adept at mainstream action but thanks to some unnecessary chases and flabby pacing it gets less and less interesting as it goes and a potentially interesting plot twist is jettisoned in favour of the usual idiot pleasing happy ending, …
