Conspiracy Theory

Was there a conspiracy to make this boring?

A good director and three great actors are brutally underutilized but they do try their best with a script that is far too thin to justify a 132 minute running time. As a result, 'Conspiracy Theory' feels hollow when it's trying to have depth and despite the title the central conspiracy at the heart of the plot is pretty boring. What is more surprising is how boring the movie often is. I looked at a clock and it was 30 minutes into the story when it actually began! After that it took 20 minutes to introduce the villains and another hour is dedicated to the characters just wandering aimlessly same as the audience hoping for a big payoff that never happens. Like I said, the villains' plot is boring compared to similar movies despite having the freedom of implausibility as a popcorn movie. Mel Gibson is convincing as a conspiracy theorist turned fugitive but Julia Roberts is saddled with the boring role as a skeptical love interest. Patrick Stewart seems aware that he's in a mediocre film but seems thankful that it's not as bad as say 'Masterminds'.
