Although not unpleasant, it never tries to be funny or even give itself a reason for being.

The Big Year review

Those expecting a barrel of laughs will be somewhat disappointed. Stu, Brad and Kenny (portrayed by Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson) meet accidentally while "birding.: Stu is a CEO, Brad a programmer and Kenny is the confident record holder for having the best year. Despite the success of the 3 leads in the comedy genre, they try their hand in a serious and light drama about bird wacthing. Had some nice quotes like "We both won. You know what I mean" from Brad or "I should have left years ago." Best line from Kenny - "Hitchcockian." Not as bad as was suggested

It's hard to write a bad review of this movie, mainly because it's clear a great deal of time was spent developing the story and characters in this film. Competitive bird watching is given the film treatment as Black, Martin, and Wilson all compete to try and see the most birds in one year. The biggest problem with this film is that the studio decided to try and push it as a comedy, when there's not much humor here, which is probably why the film wasn't successful. This film is a straight up drama with some humorous moments. Quite honestly, Jack Black has never been more tolerable as he's allowed to develop a character instead of doing stupid …

It’s been my experience that the ease of writing a movie review is directly proportional to just how bad the movie is: a really good movie can sometimes take me several days to formulate precisely the right words----a real stinker seems to bring out all the snarky comments I can muster, at light speed. After seeing ‘The Big Year’, if my theory is correct, I should be able to whip out this sucker in about 10 minutes.
The Good: What we have here is someone’s idea of taking the hobby of bird watching to the next level; the level of competitive bird watching. Yawn. Meet Stu, Brad and Kenny (played respectively by Steve Martin, Jack Black and Owen Wilson)—three men whose lives, for reasons I have yet to comprehend, are so consumed with this hobby, that they are each willing …
