I was expecting a straight-forward horror film, but I admit they threw a curveball I didn't see coming in the story department and that deserves an extra half-star. Nice to see William B. David (aka Cigarette Smoking Man from the X-Files) again, and Jessical Biel even shows some range. Decent pick if you're in the mood for horror with a twist.

Pascal Laugier's follow up to his beast of a debut Martyrs is something of a different flavor. Jessica Biel, who I have always liked, gives an oscar worthy performance here (no joke.) I was simply stunned by her every second, this is certainly the top performance of her entire career, pity that she probably wont get any accolades for it. But she deserves them. While Martyrs was a graphic, disturbing, disorienting assault on the senses, Laugier shows he can be restrained and yet still make a satisfying picture. Boasting palpable atmosphere in spades, some truly unique twists, and some very creepy sequences, Laugier lays out the cards for you, makes you think you know the story, and then pulls the rug from beneath your feet. I look forward to what he does next, and I must repeat, …
