'A Most Violent Year' is a more subdued realistic crime drama. On the surface this looks like the typical fare. You have a rich businessman growing in wealth, while his corrupt competitors attempt to take him down. The difference from similar films here is the attention paid to the workings of this business and what it means to everyone involved. Our protagonist isn't evil, greedy, or violent. He's just very determined and calculated, wanting to earn respect through good word but not afraid to get his hands dirty. I liked this overall presentation of the story and characters. It felt very real. This is a nice slow, involving piece showcasing terrific acting. Well worth a watch for those interested.

A Most Violent Year- Carnivorous Couch Review

This is the kind of period piece I love. The kind where the detail is meticulously done, but where the period isn't where the movie begins and ends. Chandor (and mighty Bradford Young's camerawork) perfectly create grimy 1980s New York and then actually do something with it, telling a tale of challenged integrity that would make Sidney Lumet proud. Oscar Isaac continues to show that he may be the best actor of his generation when all is said and done. Genau so ein Film stellt A most Violent Year dar.

Abel Morales (Isaac) after acquiring the company from Anna Morales’ (Chastain) father employs Andrew Walsh, played by Albert Brooks, as the company’s Lawyer. When rogue thugs violently hijack one of his trucks driven by Julian (Elyes Gabel), Abel is awakened to the possibility that other competing oil companies may be in cahoots. Abel’s suspicions are heightened when several more of his trucks are hijacked for the precious fuel and resold at other storage facilities. As if the hijackings weren’t enough of a distraction to his nascent enterprise, New York City District Attorney Lawrence (David Oyelowo) …
