'The D Train' follows a typical comedy formula about a loser wanting to gain notoriety through deception. It eventually leads to a 'liar revealed' third act moment. While the formula is never pushed or subverted, there are some turns that make the characters very rounded. There's a hilarious secret (I won't give away) between Black and Marsden's characters. It alters their new friendship in complicated ways. Black owns this role. His confusion on the whole ordeal fuels the dramatic confrontations with his family and old high school alumni. The comedy isn't consistent, or going for huge laughs, but it's all funny at the right times.
