Spectacular flying scenes and thrilling dogfights propel this lavishly produced war epic. Howard Hughes' direction makes the action scenes exciting and they all aged very well for a 1930 release. The love triangle is admittedly not that interesting. It doesn't help that the two male leads simply do not have the charisma to make audiences care that much. Jean Harlow's character is surprisingly unlikable but she fares better as an actress.

Hughes impresses the world with this now very dated picture. Color and Sound were basically added after the movie was complete. A good accomplishment, but honestly not all that good. See it for historical implications behind the film.
