Something of an oddity for a comic book adaptation, Hulk was a brave attempt to make a more cerebral superhero film that unfortunately falls between two stools; it's not really action-packed nor exciting enough for kids and the subject matter is too daft for adults (killer super-poodles ??). The subject of repressed memory is very interesting but Nick Nolte manages to upstage its star at every turn and the director's use of comic style cut-ins is stylish but soon grates with overuse. A mixed bag.

I like the stylization and psychological route that the film attempts to instill, but it's all wasted on a story which doesn't serve the green giant any justice. The drama is overbearing and I don't find Eric Bana to be a fit choice for the role. All these points slow this film down to a halt. Even the few action scenes can't pound enough life back into it.

Ang Lee's Psychological Hulk

Alice C 92 - wrote on 11/24/2012

Ang Lee's Hulk is by far the best Hulk movie made in the last couple of years. Even though this movie has been extensively attacked by the critics I personally think it reflects the real nature of the Hulk. Eric Bana gives a dorky portrayal of Prof. Banner differently from both Buffalo and Norton that gave away the "cool macho" vibe. Bana's portrayal was more focused on the struggle between the two different personalities and especially about the traumatic experience that he had as a child. The audience is growing with him, trying to understand what really happened and therefore Bana is making us part of this process.
When it comes to the movie's style, Lee often used a collage sequence when two characters where interacting instead of using the usual cross-cutting, the outcome is …

Plot: A genetic scientist, Bruce Banner (played by Eric Bana), is on the verge of a great discovery in the field of cell reproduction when he is accidentally exposed to gamma radiation during an experiment gone awry, which, in conjunction with his own already altered DNA, causes him to become a rampaging green giant when he is properly provoked.

Bana's great at conveying the underlying tension of a seemingly-mild mannered scientist until he gets angry and then becomes a raging, mindless human being. Director Ang Lee does a masterful job in lifting the characters in the Hulk off of the comic page. Sam Elliott is good as General Thunderbolt Ross while Nick Nolte plays David Banner, the scientist father of the Hulk, who experimented with his own DNA and passed the genetic flaw on to his …

Review - Hulk (2003)

Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) never knew his parents, but he knew there was something hidden in his past. After he is exposed to radiation and survives, he realizes that he has a genetic ability that will change his life forever in “Hulk.”

Director Ang Lee had before been recognized for works such as “Wo hu cang long” (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) and “The Ice Storm,” and I guess he decided the best route to take was to make a crappy psychological drama about one of the most action-packed superheroes ever concocted by the immortal Stan Lee. I honestly can’t understand how such a powerhouse as The Incredible Hulk got handed to such a stylistic, overrated director.

The first thing you notice with this movie is that the title character doesn’t even come in until …
