Unlike Solondz's other films, I didn't find the black humor here. Though, the tone is still consistent with his style. The casting of multiple actors (of different ages, races and genders) to play the same main female character seemed odd at first, but I've come to appreciate it on multiple viewings. All of their performances still manage to carry the film through a central shared innocence. The scene in which Aviva's mother discusses an abortion with her is emotionally raw and a much more accurate presentation than most movies would dare to show. The moral issues that arise from the film can be interpreted from two different sides, but they ultimately end up at the same conclusion. Hence the title 'Palindromes'.

Complex, original, but unnecessarily confusing drama that gives no closure or emotional resonance to its audience; it challenges us to identify with a character who's identity and appearance is constantly changing, but the gimmick doesn't quite work. Sharon Wilkins is remarkably heartfelt in the film's best sequence. Final Grade: C+
