Plot: Captain Red runs a hardy pirate ship with the able assistance of Frog, a dashing young French sailor. One day Capt. Red is captured and taken aboard a Spanish galleon, but thanks to his inventiveness, he raises the crew to mutiny, takes over the ship, and kidnaps the niece of the governor of Maracaibo.

This Polanski pirate adventure bombed at the box office and was mauled by critics, but I actually found it great fun. It was probably the first to deconstruct the classic swashbuckler, showing the grimier, more seedy side of piracy. It has loads of humour and period detail in a similar vein to Richard Lester's The Three Musketeers and Walther Matthau is always great fun to watch. Think of it as "the adventures of Jack Sparrow's dad"!

Vor Polanskis Pirates gab es lange Zeit keinen Piratenfilm und danach sollte es genauso lange keinen mehr geben. Pirates markiert den absoluten Nullpunkt des Genres. Hier kommt also Walter Matthau als Pirat. Hinter seinem Makeup und seinen Kostümen ist er kaum erkennbar, ausserdem stützt er sich auf ein Holzbein. Matthau spielt Capt. Red, einen alten Haudegen, der aber mit seinem Schiffsjungen Frog (Chris Campion) auf offener See treibt. Beide schiffbrüchig, konnten sie sich auf dem Floss retten, dass nun von einem Hai verspeist wird. Gerade will Captain Red den Frog fressen, als sie von einer spanischen Galere gerettet werden. Dieses Schiff namens Neptune ist der wahre Star von Pirates und wurde eigens für den Film gebaut. An Bord ein goldener Thron, den Red bereits als Beute …
