Overly stylized action western with a decidedly revisionist sensibility. Mario Van Peebles lets the bullets fly as the leader of a group of black ex-soldiers trying to avenge fallen comrades by a vicious racist colonel (Billy Zane). Van Peebles over-directs the hell out of this movie with dutch angles every other shot and hyper kinetic action scenes. But the action is gloriously ridiculous and the camaraderie among the lead actors is fun. Its social commentary packs more a punch than a lot of Oscar bait movies.

Rather trashy blaxploitation reinvention of the western, much more in the anachronistic spirit of Young Guns than Unforgiven (Tone Loc doesn't even TRY to act like a cowboy!). It's amusingly dumb, particularly the sequences involving backward gun totin' redneck Stephen Baldwin, but it takes itself a lot more seriously than it should. Nice to see some cameos by stars of the original blaxploitation films of the 70s though.
