Plot: A young physician, Robert Merivel, finds himself in the good graces of King Charles II and is granted the wealth and privilege of someone in his position. When a mistress of the king grows suspicious, he has Merivel marry another one of his mistresses to divert attention and gives him just one command: to not fall in love. However, love in inevitable and when the king learns of it - strips Merivel of his status. But this setback allows Merivel to once again find his true calling: as a physician. -- Chris Kavan

Gorgeous production design overwhelms an okay story about a doctor (RDJ) that ascends to the royal court of England only to fall from grace. But then as these movies usually go, he finds redemption in a more altruistic life. It's well acted but predictable. But the sets and the costumes rival the likes of 'Barry Lyndon' and 'Cleopatra' in terms of splendor.
