Entertaining But Eventually Falls Flat

My liking of this film is as polarized as its two halves. The first half of the film was quite unique. This is the movie I came to the theater to see. Unfortunately, the second half of the movie degraded into a half-baked harebrained plot schematic thought up by an 8-year old with ADD. Perhaps that’s being a bit harsh, but it is frustrating to see a film with so much potential nose drive midway through.
Will Smith gives another strong and surprisingly out-of-character performance as a surly and disgruntled super hero. Hancock may save lives and stop criminals, but at a cost that leaves the west coast infrastructure barely intact. So what do you do when you get drunk and smash a freeway? Hire a PR agent, of course.
Unfortunately the movie ends on a flat note after abandoning its original tone. As with I Am Legend, Will Smith is extraordinarily entertaining, but his performance alone can’t carry the movie. Maybe he should think about reading the script in its entirety next time?
