Argo is Overrated

Can you spell overrated? I sure hope I can because I’m going to be using the word a lot in this review.
Argo recently won the Oscar for best picture and I can’t honestly say I’m surprised. I’ve never really been in tune with the Academy’s taste in movies, and while I did like a few of their choices (Anna Karenina’s win for best costume design was the highlight of the evening for me,) I was a little disappointed by Argo’s win for best picture. Was I surprised? No (in fact I won a bet with my friend over it, he thought Lincoln would win,) I was just hoping that a better movie would win this year.
I liked Argo fine. It was an enjoyable thriller with some decent acting, but that’s all. There was nothing in the film to push it from good to great. I saw the movie then stepped in to the world and found out that everyone was going batcrap saying it was the best movie of the year. The movie is hilariously overrated, and I just don’t get it.
There were plenty of things I liked about Argo. I especially liked the early sequence were the embassy is under attack, the movie is shot in such away to make the audience feel fearful and claustrophobic, and honestly made me think that Affleck would make a good horror director. I also liked the interactions between the refugees; there was a lot to like in this movie.
That said, Ben Afleck's character was boring as tar, and the second act, which constituted the comedy bits of the film, wasn’t particularly interesting or funny. While those aren’t huge problems, they aren’t enough to ruin the movie, but they are however enough to make this movie one that is overrated.
Seriously what am I missing? It just seems like a decent thriller to me, nothing special. If anyone knows what I’m missing from this film to understand why it’s so great, please tell me. I want to like this movie as much as the rest of you, but it just feels so overrated.

You aren't missing anything. This is a solid movie but nothing special. To be forgotten in five years or less. The Town was better.
