Classic Escapism

Robin Hood has been immortalized on screen so many times that it’s kind of ridiculous, the first Robin Hood movie was released in 1912 and the latest in 2010! Hood has been played by everyone from Carrey Elwes to Kevin Costner. He is one of the most iconic and loved characters, not only in cinema, but in every art-form.
So why all of the hullabaloo over the 1938 version? Why can I find this movie on blu-ray at Wal-Mart were not even the 2010 version was represented? Why does everyone remember this flick when most, if not all, other Hoods have been forgotten?
What really makes this one special is the sense of fun the whole movie brings to it. Everybody is really enjoying their roles, it’s nearly impossible not enjoy the whole thing along with them. The whole thing is bright and whimsical without being cheesy or goofy. This is really up there with The Wizard of Oz for me in the classic escapism department.
Now I have seen only a small fraction of the Robin Hood films, but out of the ones I have seen I like this one the best. All of the other Hoods are trying to put some new spin on the classic tale (Robin Hood with sexual humor, Robin Hood with Foxes ECT.) This one plays it straight, and god bless it for doing so. I can’t see any reason why anyone would dislike this classic adventure film, definitely check it out.
