Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters

A Fun Action Flick

I give up. For years now I’ve tried to really think about each and every movie I see and really analyze what is good and/or bad about them, but half the time my conclusions seem to be different from everyone else’s. I though The Master was the best flick of 2012; It wasn’t nominated for best picture, I Thought Argo was overrated; It won best picture and I though The Last Stand was the best action movie I’d seen in a while; it flopped. Now here I am giving Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters, a movie that currently has 15% on Rotten Tomatoes, a good review; all attempts to conform have pretty much been dropped.

I just don’t understand what everyone hates about this movie. I think the action scenes were fun, I thought the dark-age steam punk world they created was unique and fun and while it was a little bit predictable (Gretel falls pretty neatly into damsel in distress territory at the end,) it brought enough unique plot material to the mix to keep me entertained.

Compare this to Oblivion, a movie that I saw about the same time. Oblivion was just a hodge-podge of Sci-fi clichés from the last fifty years; Hansel and Gretel was a new take on a fairy tale, and while that sort of movie has been “In” lately, Hansel and Gretel did a lot to stand out.

The movie is goofy and violent, but that’s what makes it fun to watch. It never steps over the line into Transformers level retardation. I feel like the film makers actually tried to make an original entity that made the audience care about the characters.

So check this one out. It’s violent and obscene, but if you were okay with Django, this should be a walk in the park.
