A Mildly Entertaining Waste of Time

Shyamalan’s is one of the most hated movie directors of all time. Not because he’s really all that bad, but because he was set-up to be great and failed. His movies became obsessed with twists instead of the characters and atmosphere, the real reasons The Sixth Sense was so good.
After Earth was based on a story written by Will Smith, not Shyamalan’s, so (spoilers) there is no real twist. The movie is a pretty straightforward adventure Sci-Fi story about the relationship between a father and his son. The concept (though not completely original) is interesting, as is the strange alternate version of Earth that the adventure takes place in.
The movie should, in theory, be a lot of fun, but sadly it isn’t. Its parts are better then the whole; It’s a story that relies on emotion, but keeps the emotions at arms length. The relationship between the father and son, which is what the movie mostly focuses on, looks good on paper and nowhere else.
There’s nothing blatantly horrible about After Earth, it’s just sort of lame. It’s not painful to watch, it’s just kind of dull. If you’re excited about the movie, check it out, but other then that there isn’t really any reason to see it.

After Earth Review comment
Well said. Pursuit of Happyness was way better tan the effects heavy After Earth.
