A Disappointing Sequel

Star Trek into Darkness is the sequel to J.J. Abrams 2009 reboot of the series, and it feels like it. It keeps the pace, the actors and tone of Abrams last “Trek” film.
The only real big difference between this movie and the last is in quality. Star Trek (2009) was a rousing adventure, but the sequel tries way too hard to be the “Dark Knight” of Star Trek, and doesn’t pay enough attention to actually making the characters motivation and plot make sense.
The whole thing has a fast pace and energy to it that makes it difficult to notice on a first viewing, but on repeat viewings the movies plot falls apart into nonsensical nothingness, especially Cumberbatch’s character.
The movies saving grace is the relationship between Kirk, Spock and the other crew members of the enterprise. These characters are all likable and the banter between them works really well. I’m still amazed by the spot-on casting in these new Trek flicks.
“Into Darkness” is incredibly overrated movie, it’s not a horrible movie, but it’s a pretty lame one. If you disagree, go see this one again; you might be surprised.
