A Pleasant, (Scary,) Surprise

I did not want to see this movie.
I have a tradition of going to see an early bird showing of a new movie every Friday morning. For scheduling reasons I went and saw the Conjuring, the movie that looked the least appealing to me.
I watched a couple trailers, and it the conjuring just did not look good to me. It looked like paint by the numbers haunted house movie. Even the title sounded lame; “The Conjuring” sounds like something you would name a horror movie because all the other good horror movie names were taken.
Fortunately I was pleasantly surprised by The Conjuring. The movie does take a lot from other movies (especially the Exorcist and Poltergeist,) but that’s less a fault then it is a feature, homage; and the movie doesn’t rely solely on the backs of others, it brings enough new material to the table.
The movie isn’t particularly complex, but it has a great creepy atmosphere and enough twists to keep it’s audience guessing. It’s an entertaining watch for film fans, and a must-see for horror fans.
