Rio 2

Poorly Put Together and Boring

I went to go see Rio 2 at the discount theater (1.25$ for a movie that is reaching the end of its theatrical run,) and It was only just worth the price of admission. It’s not a terrible movie, but it’s not a very good one either. It doesn’t feel like there was a whole lot of thought put into this children’s flick, it feels cobbled together from bits and pieces of other story ideas.

I guess most of the voice actors do a good job, and the animation is pretty at times, but overall this movie doesn’t know were its going. The central conflict is within Blue (The bird, who was also the protagonist of the first Rio movie,) it’s an internal conflict. He’s struggling with feelings of emasculation brought on by his surroundings. Yet somehow the movie shoes in three antagonistic groups of characters into the mix, most of which have only glancing importance to the actual plot.

The creators must have realized early on that their plot didn’t have enough to cover a full-length feature so they added a swarm of various villains, some bad comic relief and a big bunch of pointless musical sequences in order to make up for their inadequacy.

Easily the best parts of the movie are the Cockatoo villain (who is out for revenge after the events of the first Rio) and the musical numbers. The Cockatoo and his friends get all of the laughs in the flick, and the musical numbers are the most fun of all the sequences. But as I have already mentioned neither of these things have anything to do with the central plot of the movie; it’s pretty bad when the best things about a movie are the same things that probably should have been cut out of it.

Overall Rio 2 isn’t a bad movie, it’s just poorly put together and boring. If you’re only paying a couple bucks to watch it, it’s a decent diversion. But I feel bad for the people who paid 12 dollars or more to go see this opening weekend. It’s a pretty soggy kids flick; especially compared to “How to Train Your Dragon 2” or “The Lego Movie.”
