Marvel's New Team Scores a Win

'Guardians of the Galaxy' is a fresh new turn in the overarching 'Avengers' cinematic universe. It stands out as the most unique, simply for it's space setting and huge array of colorful characters. The world feels massive. It becomes a lot to take in, at first. Though, it doesn't get bogged down by too much exposition at the start of the story. Explanations are evenly placed throughout so that you learn more about the individuals as the story progresses. There are ties to the 'Avengers' universe, but they are used only sparingly and effectively as to not invade too much of the plot. 'Guardians' works terrifically as a standalone piece because of this. Our five heroes are the cause of most of the disorder. Their eventual alliance is justified through their shared grief of past hardships. They compliment each other well with their separate abilities and personalities. There isn't a weak one in the group. As with 'The Avengers', the most appealing aspect of the piece lies in the building of camaraderie between different beings. Here, the vast differences make the journey more dire and comical. There are many good laughs present. It's easily the funniest of the Marvel series. The surprising bit of heart slowly makes it's presence known. It comes to a head in the finale that is both bombastic and subtly touching. 'Guardians' is a very fun new chapter for Marvel that left me amped and ready for future adventures with this unconventional crew.
