Hit-and-Miss Sequel

'Zoolander 2' can be ranked amongst the ever-growing list of disappointing comedy sequels. It may not have come close to obtaining the charming weird irreverence of the first, but I have definitely seen worse. What works in this continuation is the returning characters. Stiller and Wilson still make a great comedic duo as Derek and Hansel. They managed to make even the dumbest jokes in this movie seem funny just from their performances. The humor is very hit-and-miss, but some of the hits did make me laugh out loud. There were a handful of individual moments that retained the qualities I find endearing about the superbly dumb original film. That said, most of the new material does not land. Outside of one or two glorified (and strange) cameos, the new cast offers very little. Some of those cameos were forced references. No new doofuses to liken to. The plot is ludicrous, as was expected. There feels more of an emphasis on skipping ahead to the gags this time around. Call-backs to the previous film's jokes didn't do much for me, either. It became a series of peaks and valleys, in terms of my laughter. It's funny enough for a rental if you're a fan of the original 'Zealander' film. That's the highest I can recommend it.
