Field's Shines in Bittersweet Drama/Comedy

'Hello, My Name is Doris' was a pleasant surprise. This drama/comedy focuses on one senior woman's desires to live out the life she never got to experience due to her life choices and obligation to family. She starts off as a nice (slight) recluse, but over the course of the film we discover more about her past. This only served to strengthen my emotional connection with her. She finds a willingness to aim for a completely unobtainable goal, bringing out the best qualities of herself she's kept dormant. Her strive to romantically pursue a much younger man at her place of work plays out in such a charming fashion. All of her awkward missteps are meant for laughs, but they are not in the vein of mocking. All of the humor is sharp and very funny. I laughed out loud quite often. The friendship made between her and the younger gentleman turns into something sweet, but also of the bittersweet variety. The film balances the two so perfectly. Sally Field gives one of my absolute favorite performances I've seen from her. I also loved the raw, funny, and warm performance from Tyne Daly, who plays her longtime best friend. The two make an excellent pair. I'm still surprised by the equal amount of emotional investment and fun I had with this film. A highly enjoyable watch that I'd recommend to anybody.
