The list of good actors in this movie is remarkable. John Cusack, Ken Watanabe, Chow Yun-Fat, Gong Li, David Morse, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Franka Potente in the same movie together? The movie is entertaining for that alone. They're the type of actors that could make a Michael Bay movie a prestige piece. I'm sure that Shanghai had the same lofty ambition in mind because every shot and line of dialogue seems tailor-made for that in mind. It's not even Oscar-bait material unfortunately. It's a classic case of style versus substance. But it's undeniably watchable and I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it.
