Sharks on a sub!

The only way to get to the sub's nuclear reactor ls by going through a room filled with sharks. Let me repeat that: the only way to get to the sub's nuclear reactor is by going through a room FILLED WITH SHARKS. Apart from the obvious poor planning involved in such a layout (and mind you, the room full of sharks Is NOT intended as a security measure - that's apparently just where the sub's designers decided to put it), there's also this little issue... What exactly is the point of studying sharks on a submarine? I mean, experiments were conducted on the space shuttles and have been and continue to be conducted on the international space station because those places offer a unique environment not found on earth. But an aquarium on a sub is no different than an aquarium anywhere else. So wouldn't it be more convenient to study sharks in an aquarium that's NOT on a submarine? Never is it explained why poor Peter Lorre is studying sharks at all, nor why he needs to be studying them on a sub, nor why a shark expert is also an expert on extinguishing space fires with nuclear missiles. Yes, the room o' sharks is just a minor element, but it illustrates the silliness of this film.
