Review - The Gate (1987)

When Glen (Stephen Dorff) and Terry (Louis Tripp) found a hole in Glen’s backyard, they never expected it to lead to Hell. Now they must try and stop a demonic take over in “The Gate.”
Never have I been more bored to tears with the first half of a movie then completely enthralled with the second. The entire first half is just exposition leading up to a very well done second half, even if the writing is still pretty pathetic. The special effects are pretty well done for the time.
There are a lot of things I don’t like about this movie, such as the acting and the writing, but overall it’s actually pretty good. There are some clever moments and some pretty cool scenes, but there’s also a lot of mistakes and confusing techniques used, most of which only took place in the first half.
I’m actually rather surprised that “The Gate” is only rated PG-13, because I don’t remember seeing anything as horrifying as this when I was that age and not being traumatized by it. Regardless, it’s worth checking out if you like this kind of stuff.
