Frontier(s) ( Frontière(s) )

Nothing New

Frontier(s) directed by Xavier Gens, is a small attempt at creating a sort of new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Containing elements from movies like Saw, The Descent and other big name horror films, Frontiers brings absoulutely nothing new to the table. Instead, it brings loads of gore which I am not complaining about, and nothing which could really make me excited about when it comes to showing me something new on the horror side of things.

Frontiers was originally contained in the 8 Films To Die For Horror Fest but was removed. Supposedly i was removed because it was too harsh to be shown with the other films fo it was replaced. The movie was released in theatres for 2 days but was released the day afterwards on DVD. The ad for the movie was featured in every DVD case for the 8 films in the fest so that made me want to see the movie in the first place.

I kinda dont really have a problem with the shaky hand held camera style which is used in a lot of movies in today's society, especially low budget horror films. Xavier Gens is the man who brought us the adaptation of Hitman, and I cant compare these two films because it seems like for Hitman, he changed his style a little bit to fit the mood for that film. There were a few specific moments in Frontiers where the camera was thrown around a lot more then necessary and I kind of felt like maybe he pushed it too far.

The movie is known by fans alike for the elaborate and very gory sequences the movie contains. While I watched the unrated directors cut, I felt that the movie was not all that gory. A lot of people said it was to extreme which it certainly was not, I guess it's because I am so used to it I dont realize how much there actually is. Well, Frontiers contains many moments where the gore packs a punch.

The biggest problem with Frontiers is the fact that it is nothing new at all. This is the thing which made it earn the 2 star rating because it feels like a more messed up remake of everything ever made then a new horror movie.
