Before the initial release of 30 Days of Night, most horror movie sites were having a ball with how much exciting information about the film was being released. I set my hopes extremely high for the film, although I have not read the graphic novel by Steve Niles, I read the novel he released which was the exact same thing as the graphic novel. It was amazing, slightly different then the film, but it was amazing. Even though I am not a huge fan of the vampire sub genre, I really looked into the movie. Now that I got it off netflix, I am in love with it.
In the Northern most town in the world, there is a time when they have one month, 30 days, of straight night. On the first day of night though, dogs are being butchered and vandalism starts taking over the town. But when people begin getting killed, the know somethings up, and a group of people, must survive against their worst dreams.
Josh Hartnett did a really good job in Ridley Scotts Black Hawk Down, in which was my first time seeing him in a major film. He plays as a cop, really, one of the only cops. His performance in the beginning is different then his performance in the end, where his character completely changes. In the beginning, hes a tough cop who seems to be liked and dis liked by others. In the end though, I thought his performance was spectacular, in traditional horror movie style.
The big thing which seems to stand out about the film is the overall visual style and directorial approach to the movie. The film is really gray with a lot of black, but when blood soaks the screen, its very bright, really amazing me with some really cool shots. There are a couple of shots in the film which were just amazing, including an overhead shot where we see major amounts of chaos, a shot which I will never forget.
The film definately has its fair moments of scares and just plain wow sequences. The makeup effects on the vampires look spectacular. The film is also soaked in amazing blood scenes, including bites, blood sprays, splatters, decapitations and much much more.
Bottom Line: Wow
