In Defense of the Dreaded X

Talk about violent pornography - Caligula was so expensive, it took four years and nearly destroyed Penthouse in the process. Yet this is a wholly unique film - the talent involved is amazing considering the subject matter. This is not a great film (mainly due to the choppy editing, cuts and other technical issues) but it is interesting. Sick and perverted, but still interesting none-the-less.
Whoever thought that a historical epic would be better by mixing in some good old fashioned hardcore sex (an orgy here, a lesbian tryst here - oh yeah, that's what we need!) was properly roasted over the coals. Yet Caligula isn't the colossal mistake its made out to be. Nothing like this could be made today. Call me crazy, but if any blockbuster was half as interesting as Caligula, it might pump some new life into what is becoming a CGI wonderland and sequel-happy Hollywood.
