Not content with having spoiled and raped planet Earth of all of its natural resources, the insatiable forces of capitalist greed seek to expand their ravenous appetite to other resource-rich planets in the galaxy, in this case, "Pandora." The fact that Pandora has an indigenous population--the Navi--whose village just happens to be situated directly above a rich mineral deposit, is no obstacle to the mighty forces of military imperialism.
Initially marines are sent in to infiltrate the Pandoran population in "avatar" bodies (grown from a mixture of human and “alien” DNA) in order to gather recognizance and earn the trust of the natives. But when diplomacy fails, might makes right as the wanton destruction of a pristine ecosystem and native people begins in earnest. The only hope resides in a paraplegic marine who has "gone native" in his avatar body, a la Dances With Wolves. Will the militaristic forces of capitalist imperialism destroy Pandora and its people, or can they possibly be stopped? In the end, it is gratifying to watch the military psychopaths get their just comeupins. The message for us here is clear: Spirit will prevail over the grosser forces of egoic materialism that currently threaten to destroy our own planet.
The visuals in the movie are stunning, especially in 3D. James Cameron has managed to create a lush, phosphorescent, realistic-looking world of Pandora. This is definitely one movie not to be missed on the big screen, preferably an IMAX if there is one available near you.
