The Anti-Cloverfield

The minimalism and travelogue documentary style of shooting in this film is impressive. As a thriller, it is surely underwhelming, but the engulfing atmosphere created on such a tiny budget is entrapping. It's the anti-Cloverfield - a realistically shot monster/alien movie that relies more on building character and a slow sense of dread and tragedy than it does on spectacular special effects sequences. So, while I didn't feel the all-out terror and excitement that I felt during a screening of Cloverfield, I still was completely entranced by both the characters and the setting. I almost feel that the fatalistic ending dashes all the bittersweet beauty that came before.
