A Good Modern Feminist Picture

The main reason why I liked this movie quite a bit is because of the way the story unfolded. It was very honest and there were a lot of instances where it could have fallen to cliches but managed to avoid them. Amber Tamblyn was really enjoyable in this because you believe that she's this innocent girl that was raised in a bubble; when reality struck, it struck her hard and it was utterly devastating to watch. Tilda Swinton is also effective because she has this tough exterior but as the movie goes on, we get to know more about her--that she's not as strong as she may seem. This film is not just about one particular tragedy. It consists of many layers, some of which include belonging, the fine line between reality and illusion, maturity, societal influence, and personal choices. It's sort of modern feminist film, which I enjoyed, because I've recently taken a few Women's Studies courses and I was able to relate some of the issues we've talked about with this picture. Sometimes, it can get a little too somber, not just because of the lighting and how it was shot, but because of the subject matter. It really is worth seeing because this small film is not afraid to tackle certain subjects, unlike most mainstream films out there.
