A fairly enjoyable romp with pleasantness all around. The music is fine I really like the classics and the "new" stuff for the film is okay. The story is good enough to follow through because of the likable performances from Barry Fitzgerald who is always very likable especially in the quiet man and Bing Crosby who is actually toned down in this film and that is a good thing. It is not like he is in High Society where he really over does everything. So good film with a message I certainly support.
Oscar Win Best Actor Bing Crosby 3/5- Bing Crosby is just fine in this and there is nothing wrong with him at all. In fact it probably is his best musically based performance but he does not do anything past that. He is fully satisfactory though. Sometimes he can be annoying but not this time.
Oscar Win Best Supporting Actor Barry Fitzgerald 5/5- Fitzgerald is completely and utterly enjoyable to watch in everything he is and here he gets a bigger part. This enables more enjoyment and Fitzgerald is great in every scene. He is just perfect with incredibly small reactions such as his ending smile which is just perfect.
Oscar nominee Best Actor Barry Fitzgerald- He was nominated for both so I would just disqualify him here.
