With a good cast and a screenplay that, whilst hardly an exemplar of great writing, manages to be relatively believable in spite of the sheer absurdity of the premise, Godzilla is an enjoyable blockbuster event. Particular praise must be handed to Bryan Cranston, who lends the film a raw emotional energy that it probably doesn't deserve. Alexandre Desplat also deserves credit for composing a refreshingly classical score.
It's by no means at masterpiece, but I'd take it over Pacific Rim any day of the week.
