Comedies tend to get overlooked when they're handing out the medals (too trivial), but not by me. I can't recall when I saw a funnier film than this. What makes it so is Jack Black's astonishing performance as hopeless guitarist Dewey Finn, a great script and Linklater's attention to detail.
If you're going to spoof a genre, then do so with affection and accuracy as Linklater does here. The kids in the film are brilliant, and they played and sung all the music themselves. 11/10 for that, guys. Linklater has really come on strong in the last couple of years. From commercial films like this, to experimental work such as Waking Dreams, and the artful Before Sunrise. Right now, he seems to be able to make a fist of anything.
