Phillipe Garrel's film covers the same period and events as Bertolucci's Emanuelle '68 (aka The Dreamers), though opts for a more poetic, not to mention chaste approach. The crisp monochrome photography would more than grace any film noir, while being perfectly suited to the (non narrative) task in hand. The two films were shot almost side by side and shared (or rather Garrel 'borrowed') the same sets, extras and even the male lead - Garrel's son, Louis. But in terms of capturing the zeitgeist, these regular lovers' wins hands down.
