Based on the novel The Hunter by Donald Westlake this is one of the best films of the 60s. It's a rock hard story of revenge with an effective subplot about corporate anonymity. Lee Marvin is terrific as the type of thug which defined his career - not the kind of guy you'd want to rip off which is what happens here. John Vernon and Angie Dickinson are among the many culprits and all perform like they mean it. It's a bold looking film with primary colours and includes a psychedelic nightclub scene that wouldn't look out of place today. Which makes me wonder...why don't they re-master and re-release this film instead of making rubbish remakes, in this case, Payday?
