Amazing indeed.

This reboot of the Spider-Man franchise has been getting a lot of hate from critics, but in truth it bests Sam Raimi's version in every way. I wasn't a fan of the original trilogy, mostly because Raimi had to throw in so much self-indulgent campy crap that just about derailed everything. Plus Tobey McGuire and Kirsten Dunst were quite horrid and unappealing (and I like Dunst.) This time around though, Marc Webb, whose last film 500 Days of Summer which was fantastic, completely surprised me here. He's great in executing human relationships and character interactions that are never phony, but are endearing. Andrew Garfield is INCREDIBLE here, he's already proven himself to be a talented young actor (Boy A and The Social Network, for instance) but he completely owns this role and tops the previous incarnation of Spiderman. The film is appropriately darker in tone and rarely misteps. It's funny, tragic, scary, filled with fluid action set pieces, and a real sense of danger. I loved this movie, and this is the Spiderman I wanted back in 2002. Amazing indeed, and I can't wait for the next installment. (really horrible review, but whatever.)
